Folding
Fold drives skip the void between distant points through paired temporary wormholes.
A fold drive doesn’t travel through space. It steps around it. The destination is a real place under the same sky, a galaxy-width of void away; the fold skips the void. Charge the drive, and the moment it completes, two wormhole mouths open at once: one right on your own hull, one where you’re going, both real objects in the same sky. Each mouth is a throat of pure suction — streaks of matter and light pulled straight in, accelerating and stretching taut as they close on the center, the backdrop itself visibly bending toward the hole. The near mouth doesn’t just open near you, it opens ON you and stays locked to your hull, and you don’t just shrink beside it — you’re pulled apart into it: your ship stretches taut toward the throat, spaghettified along its own length, before the whole hull collapses down to nothing with only the faintest tuck of a roll. An instant later you’re spat back out of the far mouth, snapping back through the same stretch in reverse before settling to full size. Both mouths linger a moment, then dissipate. Zoom out to chart range while a fold completes and the pair reads as a bridge stitched across the gap.
Costs and constraints:
- Every fold burns one Fold Crystal, and the drive will not begin its charge without one in the hold — the readout says NO CRYSTAL and the press is refused outright. This is never a trap: starlanes and gates cost no crystals at all, so an empty locker slows you down, it does not strand you.
- Folding drains the ship’s energy capacitor heavily. An empty capacitor means waiting for regeneration, so plan the return trip.
- The drive needs a charge-up window; you are vulnerable while the spiral forms. Cancelling mid-charge refunds nothing — the energy is gone and so is the crystal.
- Targets are picked at chart range: zoom out until systems read as marks (see Navigation), then left-click one to select it. The selection arms your Fold key — press it to charge. Any charted system is a valid destination, including systems no lane reaches. Charging from the chart drops you back to flight view immediately, so the swirl and the throat opening happen in front of you, not under the map.
Where the crystals come from
Nowhere you can buy. Check every dock you like: no station stocks a Fold Crystal, no market screen quotes one, and no trade interface you upgrade to will ever put a price beside the name. That is not a gap in the listings. Crystals were made before the Collapse, by people who are all dead, and nothing alive has worked out how to make another — so what exists is what exists, and every one you burn is one fewer forever.
They are found, and only in one place: human wreckage. Working a derelict with the salvage array, the same rare strike that occasionally turns up Ancient/Exotic Salvage can come up a crystal instead of the exotic — not alongside it. It is a strike inside a strike, and it is rare enough that you will remember each one. Ordinary rock never yields one; no belt anywhere in charted space has ever produced a crystal, because crystals form under black-hole time and pressure and nowhere else.
Your locker starts with the vault cache and is not refilled by anyone. Until you learn to make them yourself, that is the entire supply: what you were given, plus what you dig out of the dead.
The other way to fold
Notice what your drive is actually doing for you. You pick a system on the chart and you arrive at that system — the one you picked, every time, alive. That is not what folding is. That is what folding is like when the geometry is intact and something is mediating it.
The Sen’Ther fold without any of that. They reverse- engineered the technique off a damaged Ancient core that kept the fold geometry and lost everything that aimed it, and they never replaced the missing half. So their hop goes a few thousand units instead of across the chart, it scatters around where they meant to be instead of landing on it, and it kills most of the pilots who try. The ones it doesn’t kill are the Sen’Ther elite. That is not a figure of speech about skill — it is a survival rate.
Which is worth holding onto when they sneer at you for needing gates and infrastructure to get anywhere. They are not better at this than you. They are simply willing to spend people on it, and they have been spending them long enough to have built a culture around the ones who came back. Nothing about their hop is a shortcut you are missing. It is the same trick with the safety torn out.
Some places exist only for those who fold, at least at first. The deep sites (black hole research posts, voidite fields) often ship with no working gate at all: the far end sits dormant until somebody folds in and switches it on. After that the shortcut is permanent: you taught the frontier a new road, and you don’t have to fold that leg again. Until then, the fold drive is the only door.
The ring
Ancient drives fold with a ring: a structural hoop the hull is built through, taking the load the fold puts on the frame. It is the stargate’s own technology at ship scale, which is why a gate is just a ring with no ship attached. Watch an Ancient hull fold and the ring is where the throat anchors — the mouth opens through the hoop, not off the nose. Other yards reach the same place with a fold drive buried in the hull and show nothing; only the Ancient fleet, and your Vindicator, carry the mechanism where you can see it. That ring is why a fighter-class body can eventually fold at all, where the rule elsewhere reserves it for torpedo ships and larger.
